Who We Are
Library of Experiential Education

History

Founded in Spokane, Washington, in 1999, Empowering, Inc has persistently served communities with fun, hands-on experiential learning opportunities in schools, homes and various community events.  The dedication and creative input of volunteers, interns and staff continually improves Empowering, Inc’s ability to promote, protect and preserve the inherent rights of children to learn in their primary language:  play.

Vision

Empowering, Inc will focus efforts to continue to develop its library of experiential education materials and gear, by promoting and sharing innovative experiential education resources worldwide.

Heather Fitzgerald, MSW, EI Coordinator

April Cathcart
April Cathcart began developing the concept of Empowering, Inc. during middle school when she discovered the power of       experiential education through play during a mentor training. April leads with her compassion, creativity, and innovative thinking.  For the last decade, she has provided extensive therapeutic experiences to a diverse range of people in schools, homes and        community settings.

Brenda Tarvin
Brenda Tarvin has a previous background in social services, coordinating a youth crisis line, volunteering as a domestic violence advocate and serving more than a decade as a Community Services Block Grant County supervisor, providing low income services in rural Idaho.  During that time, Brenda attended numerous trainings, conferences and workshops focused on working with families to reduce the impact of poverty on their daily lives.

Our experiential education library is guided by the principle that people learn best through experience.  Fun, hands-on learning activities offer fresh opportunities to learn and practice new skills.  Our library provides the tools and resources for this approach to learning.  From rubber chickens and hula hoops to feelings games, we have the materials needed to facilitate.
Empowering, Inc will focus efforts to continue to develop its library of experiential education materials and gear, by promoting and sharing innovative experiential education resources worldwide.

Our library is currently open to Empowering, Inc. Services staff.  Our goal is to open to the public through phases as the library continues to develop and grow.  We will first open our library doors to service professionals working with youth and families and eventually extend services to the general public.
